Processed Foods
Processed foods are a big no-no when it comes to managing arthritis. They’re high in sodium, which is a known trigger for the condition. To help prevent flare-ups and pain, make the switch from processed foods to fresh ones that are rich in nutrients.
To reduce your intake of processed foods, avoid buying canned or pre-packaged meals and snacks. Instead, eat whole ingredients that can be prepared at home at least once per week. If you do buy packaged goods, read labels carefully for sodium levels as well as other additives, as these could be contributing factors behind your symptoms too.
Gluten
Gluten is a type of protein that you can find in foods like wheat, barley, and rye. It can also be found in bread, pasta, and other processed foods. This protein can cause inflammation in the body, which may lead to arthritis symptoms by irritating your joints or soft tissue.
Research has shown that people who have celiac disease, a condition where gluten damages the small intestine, are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those without it.
Sugar And Other Refined Carbs
There’s a reason why sugar is called “white death.” This food can cause inflammation, which then results in joint pain and swelling. Sugar also messes with your immune system by causing it to attack the joints around your body. And if that weren’t enough, refined carbs like white flour are also linked to insulin resistance.
Alcohol
Lastly, alcohol can cause inflammation and make existing symptoms worse, which is why it’s important to avoid it if you have joint pain. If you have arthritis or an autoimmune disease, alcohol may make your joints feel stiffer and more painful than usual.
